The Northern ireland Housing Executive has published the results of research into demographic change and housing need in Northern ireland. The research was conducted by a team assembled by RSM McClure Watters (Consulting) which included Emeritus Professor Chris Paris (main author) working with Dr Peter Williams (Cambridge University) and John Palmer (North Harbour Consulting). The research:

  • reviews the main demographic trends in NI since 2001;
  • explores views and attidudes about demographically-drive statistical models in housing need assessment including the Net Stock Model used by the Housing Executive since 1994;
  • evaluates the Net Stock Model in comparison with other approaches;
  • develops a Census-based model of housing demand / need in NI for the period 2011 to 2021.

John Palmer conducted cross-sector interviews with senior housing policy makers and planners and the results are contained in Section 5 of the report.
